SSL Certificate

An SSL certificate is required for any site that intends to do ecommerce.

SSL Certificates

Secure Socket Layer (also know as TLS Transport Layer Security) are cryptographic protocols that provide security and data integrity for communications over TCP/IP networks such as the Internet. TLS and SSL encrypt the segments of network connections at the Transport Layer end-to-end. Thes protocol allows client/server applications to communicate across a network in a way designed to prevent eavesdropping, tampering, and message forgery.

Security certificates are issued by trusted sources known as Certificate Authority. An SSL certificate can be purchased from your hosting provider or through a third-party vendor such as Verisign, Globalsign, Register.com. After it is purchased it then needs to be installed by your web master.

An entire site can be secured but most site only secure pages that are involved in the purchasing process. Signs that a site are secure are the presence of "https:" instead of "http:" and the lock symbol somewhere in the brower window depending on the browser. See sample below for Internet Explorer 7.
